The Taxi Driver Video Game That Never Was.

A video game based on Martin Scorseses Taxi Driver (1976) started development in 2005 and had plans to release in 2006. Even Robert De Niro reprised his role as Travis Brickle and did some voice lines for the game. The first trailer was revealed at E3 2005.

Initially fans and critics were unsure if a video game based on a character study film like Taxi Driver would make much sense. Martin Scorsese would apply a lot of pressure on the studios involved to make sure the direction of the game made sense in the same world as the original film. The games publisher was Majesco and was to be developed by Parma Studios. Scorsese worried a lackluster video game could cheapen the legacy of his classic film.

Once the game was shown off at the 2005 E3, as far as the public and initial critics were concerned. There was more optimism surrounding the projects direction. The trailer showed off a mission based grand theft auto like game in a seedy 1970s New York that was captured so well in the film.

Instead of retreading the slow burn character study of the film, the game would have served as a sequel instead. Starting at the final shootout where Travis saves Iris. The rest of the game would have taken place 2 months after the events in the film.

Between financial issues with the games publisher Majesco and the constant pressure from Martin Scorsese the game would be cancelled in 2005 and would never see the light of day.
